                HDPE dredging pipe Reduces Maintenance Costs


                Piping made from polyethylene is a cost effective solution for a broad range of piping problems in municipal, industrial, marine, mining, landfill, duct and agricultural applications. It has been tested and proven effective for above ground, sur face, buried, sliplined, floating, and sub-sur face marine applications.


                High-density polyethylene pipe (HDPE) can carry potable water, wastewater, slurries, chemicals, hazardeous wastes, and compressed gases. In fact, polyethylene pipe has a long and distinguished history of service to the gas, oil, mining and other industries. It has the lowest repair frequency per mile of pipe per year compared with all other pressure pipe materials used for urban gas distribution.


                Polyethylene is strong, extremely tough and very durable. Whether you’re looking for long service, trouble-free installation, fle xibility, resistance to chemicals or a myriad of other features, high-density polyethylene pipe will meet all your requirements.


                Lower life cycle costs


                Corrosion resistance. Does not rust, rot or corrode.


                Leak tight. Heat-fused joints create a homogenous, monolithic system. The fusion joint is stronger than the pipe.


                Maintains optimum flow rates. Does not tuberculate, has a high resistance to scale or biological build-up.


                Excellent water hammer characteristics. Designed to withstand surge events.


                High strain allowance. Virtually eliminates breakage due to freezing pipes.


                Additional cost savings are achieved by lower instance of repairs.


                With no exfiltration or infiltration, potable water losses and groundwater nuisance

                treatment costs encountered in traditional piping systems are eliminated.


                Reduced installation costs


                Material of choice for trenchless technology. Used in directional boring,

                plowing, river crossings, pipe bursting and sliplining.


                Fewer fittings due to pipe fle xibility. Allowable bending radius of 20 to 25 times

                outside diameter of pipe.


                Lighter equipment required for handling and installation than with metallic materials.


                Eliminates the need for thr ust blocking. Heat fused joints are fully restrained.


                Light weight and longer lengths allow for significant savings in labor and equipment.


                Certain properties of HDPE pipe make it applicable to dredging situations. Use of this pipe can provide cost savings in installation labor and equipment, maintenance, freedom of design, and extended life of pipeline systems. HDPE pipe has a high potential for application in the marine environment because it will not rot, rust, or corrode; conduct electricity;nor support growth of or be affected by algae, bacteria, or fungi;and is resistant to marine biological attachment. Its specific gravity of 0.955-0.957 makes HDPE 70 to 90 percent lighter than concrete, cast iron, or steel pipe, requiring greatly reduced manpower and equipment for transportation and installation. The extremely smooth inside surface and non-wetting characteristics of HDPE result in higher flow capacity and reduced friction loss. For example, a pipe coefficient or C factory of 155 is used in the Hazen-Williams formula for fluid flow calculations for HDPE pipes sections. The C factory for new steel is 140 and for old steel 125. Since the C factor value is inversely proportional to head loss due to friction, a high C value is desirable. Although HDPE pipe can be joined by flanges or compression couplings, the heat fusion technique-butt fusion- is reconmmedned. This process produces a joint of high integrity and reliability that is as strong as the pipe in both tension and hydrostatic loading. HDPE pipe cannot be joined by solvent cements or adhesives.

                Another HDPE property that makes it suited to dredging applications is its abrasion resistance. Controlled laboratory tests have shown that HDPE pipe outperforms steel pipe by a ratio of 4 to 1. It can be stored outside for years without danger of damage by ultraviolet exposure because of the carbon black content of the material. The flexible nature of HDPE enables it to absorb impact loads, surge pressure, vibrations and stresses. It can be cold bent in the field to a minimum radius of 20 to 40 times the pipe diameter, and cna easily conform to uneven ground contours.
